ROMTEHNICA-RATMIL WUM-1 (Romania)
The WUM-1 appears to be a thumbhole sporting rifle of the kind formerly imported into the United States. This however is a common misconception. Instead Romtechnika began the steps necessary to create a spotters rifle (a "spotter" being the 2nd man element in a sniper team). The weapon is fixed with a thumbhole stock for greater ease of manufacturing, a scope rail is attached to the rear quarter of the weapon for affixing optics such as the PSO-1. A wooden handgrip is attached to the hand guard for stability in full automatic firing, lastly the weapon is completed with a milgrade barrel for better accuracy. Feeding from a 30-rounds 7'62x39mm ammo magazine, this weapon is often used on full automatic when the sniper team is trying to disengage from enemy pursuers. CORRECTION added 7/6/02. This weapon is semi-auto only. It's a sporting rifle designed for import into the U.S.
