FMAP FARA 83 The argentine state-owned FMAP (Fabrica Militar de Armas Portatiles "Domingo Matheu", or "Domingo Matheu" Small Arms Factory) received at the beginning of the '80s, from the DGFM (Direccion General de las Fabricaciones Militares, or General Government Directorate for Military Procurements) the order to prepare the production roll for a new assault rifle in .5'56x45mm, which had to replace the aging FMAP FSL (argentine license-made copy of the FN FAL) still in service with their troops. At that time, Argentine was ruled by a military dictatorship, which, short time later, decided to attack the Falkland-Malvinas island and get them back from the Great Britain; they had to face a strong british military retaliation, which put the dictatorship on its knees and forced it to pull out and let the country bring back democracy. This forced the Argentine Armed Forces to strong budgetary constraints for a while, and forcing DGFM and FMAP to stop the manufacturing and the shipping of the new rifle. The first production roll stopped after 1193 rifles were made, however, another production roll, until 1990, got the FARA-83 back to production; it is unknown how many rifles were made, but the most of the Argentine Armed Forces is still today armed with the FSL-FAL rifle. The FARA-83 was a good design, mostly insipred to the HK33 for the working principle and to the israeli Galil for the external look.
