Allen & Wheelock - Center Hammer Lipfire Army - single action revolver
(Yeah, I know it's not technically a cartridge conversion, but this seemed to be the page that it fit best.) .44 Lipfire; 7.5" oct/rd barrel. - Good to fair condition. - Dark gray patina metal with light pinpoint pitting over much of the gun; some remainders of marking. Good mech; pitted dirty bore with distinct rifling. Fine grips w/ minor usage marks & most original finish. Early variation with loading gate hinged at the top. S/n 28 or 78 (first digit appears to be overstruck). - A rare & important model of revolver, with Flayderman’s estimating only about 250 total made in the early 1860’s. Altho this would hardly represent a commercial success, it is significant in that it precedes S&W’s Model 3 revolvers by several years, making it possibly the first commercially produced large bore American revolver for a metallic cartridge. With it’s Civil War era production, it is generally considered a martial piece, even tho no government purchases are known. - antq
